Mounting an artwork is a great was of displaying it if you would like the artwork to be displayed frameless, put straight in the frame without a mat, or prefer the look of a perfectly flat print with no waviness or rippling that can appear over time on unmounted prints.

Mounting artworks is not recommended for original or irreplaceable works of art, or works of art that are valuable (without the express permission from the artist) since it is not considered a fully reversible process. Artists mounting their artwork before sale is an accepted practice, as the mounting process becomes part of the artwork itself and is sold as a completed piece.

We offer several different types of artwork mounting. Please see below for some more information about our main methods.

Please book an appointment to visit our workshop and discuss mounting and laminating.

Gudy 831 Mounting and Laminating

We have a 61″ roller press for mounting artworks to non porous materials such as Aluminum Composite Material (Dibond, E-Panel) and Expanded PVC Foam (Sintra, Forex). 3mm (1/8″) Dibond is an archival material and has excellent rigidity and durability, combined with its fairly light weight, is our preferred substrate to use. It is also extremely smooth with very little texture, so is often best for use with glossy papers.

We use Gudy 831 Fine Art Smooth adhesive as it is permanent, acid-free and passes the Photographic Activity Test for long term use with photographic media. We can also add an optional matte lamination film over mounted items for added protection if no glass or acrylic with be used.

The maximum size we can mount using our roller press is 60″ wide x any length, however our standard board size is 48″ x 96″ but can get 60″ x 120″ via special order.

Vacuum Mounting

For mounting to porous materials such as museum matboards and foamboard, we generally prefer a cold vacuum mounting process.

This process involves mounting the artwork to the substrate using an acid-free adhesive in a vacuum press to ensure a permanent bond. This process is also somewhat reversible as the adhesive used can be revered with water.

The maximum size we can vacuum mount is 40″ x 60″
